The Martin Luther King, Jr National Memorial Competition
was an international design competition attracting over 2,000
artists and designers from around the world.  The design jury
was chaired by Ricardo Leggoretto---AIA Gold Medal winner---
landscape architects, design academics and representatives
from the National Park Service.  This Martin Luther King, Jr
National Memorial design was one of six finalist chosen to
execute a final design.

Materials include stainless steel fittings, etched glass, and a
variety of stones proposed for plazas and paths referencing
the communities impacted by Martin Luther King, Jr.  Axial
paths connect the Jefferson with the Lincoln Memorial and the
Washington with the Roosevelt Memorial.  Martin Luther King,
Jr is referenced as an
advocate of human rights along with all
the other Americans who have contributed to the process in a
timeline located along the various paths leading to the glass
mountain inscribed with the word and texts from Martin Luther
King, Jr's memorable writings and speeches.  The 3.5 acre
site is located near the Tidal Basin, on the Mall, in Washington,
DC.
